Internationally renowned artist Phillip King’s (1934-2021) work is characterized by a profound interest in industrial materials and abstract form, influenced by the American Abstract Expressionist movement. Blue Between expresses King’s preoccupations with the distribution and articulation of colour in space through a ground-based but space-invading form. The combination of the colour and matte finish of surface draw attention to this form as a whole “shape” rather than the particular and individual structures which compose the sculpture. The arrangement of colored planes and strong verticals invites a close involvement. This scale is human scale and the apparently random forms serve to hold the viewers attention at close quarters, a reminder of the physical, tactile aspect of the sculpture.
